  • Overview

At the Digital Biology Group (a division of Bio-Rad) we use microfluidic chips to generate nanoliter-sized droplets as reaction vessels to power a extremely precise digital nucleic acid measurement method known as droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). As we’ve established our market lead in digital PCR, we’re expanding into new applications for our core technology. We believe our partition technology (creating hundreds of thousands of droplets) will open up new avenues in basic life sciences research and become a new paradigm in life science research and clinical diagnostics markets. We are looking for an experienced Staff Scientist to be an essential member of the Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) R&D team for the Digital Biology Group’s efforts to expand into this key IVD market.

An exceptional candidate passionate about improving patients’ lives and is highly motivated in applying ddPCR technology to clinical problems. The successful candidate will be a key technical contributor and driver of assay development for the NIPT IVD program. Overall, we are seeking a self-starting individual who thrives in and truly enjoys working as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

    Responsibilities

    • In close collaboration with Marketing, determine concept/feasibility of NIPT IVD products.
    • Develop the physical product specifications and configurations that deliver the optimum product performance.
    • Design and execute experiments, perform data analysis and effectively communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Generate reports, write documents and make presentations as needed.
    • Provide technical support for transfer to operations, clinical validation, and product launch.
    • Successfully interact and align with various functional roles (including Marketing, Project Managers, Software Engineers, Computational Biologists, Biostatisticians, QA, RA, and Manufacturing) within the Digital Biology and Clinical Diagnostics Groups to drive project to completion.
    • Mentoring and coaching of junior technical staff, Research Associates to Senior Scientists.
    • Be a Thought Leader in NIPT and gain a presence in the field through inventions, product commercialization, presentations at conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

    Qualifications

    • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry with 8+ years of industrial experience (or MS with 10+ years of experience) highlighted with successful NPIs in RUO and/or clinical settings.
    • Track record of self-motivated design, execution and analysis of experiments on aggressive schedules in a rapidly changing environment.
    • Experience with nucleic acid technology relating to PCR, qPCR, and digital PCR with special emphasis on developing highly multiplexed PCR assays.
    • Highly knowledgeable in nucleic acid sample preparation and characterization is essential. Prior experience working with cell-free DNA and/or creating nucleic acid calibrators and controls a plus.
    • Detailed working knowledge of modern sequencing methods, the field of genomics, and informatics. Demonstrated understanding of all “wet lab” elements in and around NGS, including sample and target preparation, amplification and sequencing biochemistries.
    • Clinical/diagnostic laboratory experience desirable.
    • Knowledge and experience working under a Quality System and within a Product Development Process as demonstrated by past assay verification and validation work is preferred.
    • Experience in Design Excellence and/or Design for Six Sigma methodologies is a plus.
    • Experience with FDA and/or CE IVD regulation is a plus.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, logical and analytical thinking, ability to multitask, work independently and on a team, and the ability to learn, troubleshoot, and problem solve are essential.
