  • Overview

    The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist II will manage and support occupational health, and safety programs for assigned Bio-Rad facilities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. In addition, the EHS Specialist II will provide specialized technical expertise in assigned areas including Occupational Safety and Hazardous Waste Management. 

     

    He/she identifies and solves a range of problems in a range of situations (straightforward to moderate complexity); analyzes possible solutions and assesses each using standard procedures. The Specialist explains information and influences their peers and manager to ensure successful implementation of EHS programs and directives for their assigned programs.

    Responsibilities

    • Point of contact for EHS compliance efforts at assigned site location(s).
    • Works with Corp EHS and assigned site management to create new Standard Operating Procedures related to assigned environmental or safety management.
    • Holds primary responsibility for regulatory compliance of Hazardous Waste Management Programs for the Northern CA region including Medical Waste, Waste Minimization and Universal Waste and associated reporting.
    • Is the primary lead in developing, implementing and managing assigned EHS programs such as; Powered Industrial Trucks, Powered Platforms, Lock Out/Tag Out, and Warehouse Safety.
    • Utilizes established systems and practices to determine and develop approaches to problems of moderate to high complexity, based on analysis of situation or data.
    • Assists in the execution of the comprehensive EHS inspection program and tracks corrective action items to completion.
    • Communicates cross-functionally: providing resources and information to  R&D, materials management, maintenance and manufacturing personnel to identify regulatory requirements at early stage of process development.
    • Properly prioritizes and executes activities and workflows to meet established program goals and objectives.
    • Supports and/or facilitates Root Cause Investigations (RCI) and action item follow up.
    • Leads efforts in managing the Safety Committee at assigned site location(s).
    • Coordinates the information needed to complete Large Hazardous Waste Generation, Waste Water Permits, and any future Government mandated reports.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, including EHS, Environmental, biology, chemistry, engineering or equivalent experience.
    • 4+ years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • DOT Hazardous Waste certified under 49 CFR 172.704.
    • Proficient in understanding and evaluating compliance with Federal and State regulations, such as RCRA, EPCRA and other Environmental Policies and Procedures.
    • Experience with completing and submitting EHS-related reports and permit requests to appropriate regulatory agencies including EPA, County Hazardous Materials Management program, and City Regulatory Authorities.
    • Must possess excellent working knowledge and understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and other standard MS Office Tools.
    • Proficiency with Google Drive applications recommended.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to interface collaboratively with customers and peers.
    • Demonstrate reliability, self-motivated, and a strong work ethic, exhibit time management skills, be detail oriented, and perform work accurately.
    • Technical and practical knowledge of manufacturing and/or research and development is highly recommended, or a willingness to quickly become proficient is required.
