At the Digital Biology Center (a division of Bio-Rad) we use microfluidic chips to generated nanoliter-sized droplets as reaction vessels to power an extremely precise digital nucleic acid measurement method (droplet digital PCR). Now that we've solidified our market lead in digital PCR, we're expanding into new applications for our core technology. We believe our partition technology creating hundreds of thousands of droplets will open up new avenues in basic life sciences research and will become a new paradigm in clinical diagnostics.
At the heart of our digital technology is the ability to stabilize an aqueous droplet in fluorocarbon-based oil through designing and synthesizing novel surfactants. These unique surfactants allow us to control and alter interfacial properties whereby we can enable and catalyze unique in-droplet chemistries. In turn these chemistries enable novel applications in the digital biology space. To achieve this end, we have a highly engaged and talented emulsion chemistry team.
